Eastern Province
Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province is one of the country’s key administrative regions, situated in the eastern part of the nation. It shares borders with the Republic of Guinea to the north and northeast, the Southern Province to the west, and the Northern Province to the northwest.
The province is made up of three districts—Kailahun, Kenema, and Kono—with Kenema serving as both the provincial capital and its largest city.
Renowned for its diverse geography, the Eastern Province features rolling mountains, high plateaus, and numerous rivers. It is also rich in natural resources, particularly diamonds, gold, and rutile, which play a vital role in Sierra Leone’s economy. Alongside mining, agriculture thrives here, with farmers cultivating rice, coffee, cocoa, oil palm, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Languages and Culture
The province is home to several ethnic groups, each with its own language and cultural traditions. Prominent groups include:
Mende
